2006-07
All extracurricular athletic activities at Crosby Middle School are governed by the University Interscholastic League (UIL). Attached you will find copy of the UIL Academic Requirements (No Pass – No Play) policy. You may find a Parent Information Manuel and complete information at the following website:

In an effort to make athletics enjoyable for students and to aid in sportsmanship and team-building, which is the foundation of athletics, Crosby Middle School has formalized rules that have been standard practice in past years. These rules are based on the premise that students who want to participate in extracurricular athletics want to be ambassadors for Crosby Middle School and represent the entire student body, teachers and staff. Participation in athletics is a privilege, not a right. Our desire is that your child to be proud to represent a fine school.
Coaches
We are fortunate to have highly qualified coaches for the boy’s and girl’s programs this year. Boy’s athletics will include football, basketball and track. The girl’s program will be volleyball, basketball and track.
Physicals
ALL students participating in athletics are required to have a current physical. Students in athletics must have a physical on file by Friday, September 15, 2006. Students will not be allowed to participate in practice or play without a physical.
Practice times

Play; failing, grace week then ineligible for three weeks).
September 24-29 Grace week (student who fails can play final game before
three-week ineligibility).

October 13 Grade check for ineligible players; if passing, resume
playing Oct. 23; if failing, continue ineligibility.
November 3 End of second six weeks; grade check
December 14 End of third six weeks; grade check
February 16 End of fourth six weeks; grade check
April 13 End of fifth six weeks; grade

Ineligible athletes will be required to attend morning tutorials. If the regular teacher is unavailable, Coach
Sanchez will tutor from 7:00 – 7:30 a.m. Monday through Thursday.
Punctuality is an important character trait. Student athletes are expected to show up to practice on time and participate. Athletes who miss one practice (unexcused) will not be permitted to play ½ of the weekly game. Students who miss two practices in a week (unexcused) will not be permitted to play in the weekly game or travel to an away game. Students who miss two games due to unexcused absences will be removed from the athletic program. Students who have a valid excuse for missing practice should bring a written note from their parent the first day back to school. The coach will have the final say on excused absences.
Conduct
Standards for Extracurricular Participants (Extracurricular Code of Conduct)
Student participation in extracurricular
activities is encouraged, and Crosby Middle School makes these activities
available as an extension of the regular school program, with this important
distinction: participation in the
regular curricular program is a right afforded to each student;
participation in the extracurricular program is a privilege that carries
additional expectations for acceptable conduct. Students engaging in extracurricular activities represent not
only themselves, but also other students and the school district, as they perform,
compete, or participate in extracurricular activities. For this reason, the
behavior of extracurricular participants must be exemplary and reflect the
finest attributes of the total Crosby Middle School student body at all times
and places.
Important goals of the extracurricular
program are to give students direction in developing self-discipline,
responsibility, pride, loyalty, leadership, teamwork, respect for authority,
and healthy living habits. These goals
include encouraging students to make good choices and to help them avoid
illegal behaviors.
For
purposes of participation in extracurricular activities, students are subject
to the school’s jurisdiction and must comply with the terms of this Extracurricular Code of Conduct,
regardless of whether school is in session, whether there is direct involvement
in the activity at the time, whether the activity is in-season, or whether the
conduct occurs on or off school property.
Students who
participate in extracurricular activities are prohibited from:
·
Illegally
possessing or using marijuana, alcohol, a controlled substance, or any dangerous drug
·
Illegally
possessing or using drug paraphernalia
·
Committing
a serious act or offense, as defined in the HISD Student Code of Conduct, while under the influence of alcohol,
marijuana, a controlled substance, or any dangerous drug
·
Illegally
possessing or using glue, aerosol paint, and/or
volatile, mood-altering
chemicals
·
Committing
a serious act punishable as a felony
Discipline
Student athletes are held to a high standard of discipline since they are representing Crosby Middle School. Students who receive a discipline referral to the office during the week will not be permitted to play ½ of the weekly game. Students who receive two discipline referrals to the office will not be permitted to play in the weekly game or travel to an away game. Students who are suspended from school during the week will not be permitted to play in the game. Students who are placed in the Discipline Alternative Education Placement (DAEP) will not be permitted to participate in athletics during their assignment. Coaches may ask to have a student removed from the athletic program if he/she is not participating or is detrimental to the program, providing they have held a conference with the parent and the student.
The Crosby coaching staff and administrative staff truly want the extracurricular athletic program to be a rewarding experience for each participating student. We feel this is an excellent opportunity for students to learn teamwork, sportsmanship and camaraderie. Should you have any questions, please contact the coaches at 986-5528.
Eligibility for UIL
Participants For The First Six Weeks
UIL participants are eligible to
participate in contests during the first six weeks of the school year provided
the following standards have been met:
Students who are not in
compliance with these provisions may request a hardship appeal of their
academic eligibility through the UIL state office.
Local school boards may elect to
adopt these standards for all activities in order to avoid having different
standards for student participants (e.g., football, drill team, cheerleading,
and all other extracurricular activities as defined by Commissioner of
Education rule [TAC Chapter 76]). See page 14.
Eligibility For All
Extracurricular Participants After The First Six Weeks Of The School Year
A student who receives, at the
end of any grading period (after the first six weeks of the school year), a
grade below 70 in any academic class (other than an identified advanced class)
or a student with disabilities who fails to meet the standards in the
Individual Education Plan (IEP) may not participate in extracurricular
activities for at least three school weeks. An ineligible student may practice
or rehearse, however. The student regains eligibility when the principal and
teachers determine that he or she has: (1) earned a passing grade (70 or above)
in all academic classes, other than those that are advanced, and (2) completed
the three school weeks of ineligibility.
All schools must check grades for all participants at the end of the first six weeks of the school year. From that point, grades are checked at the end of the grading period whether it is six, nine, or twelve weeks in length. Students who pass remain eligible until the end of the next grading period. All activity coaches and directors are responsible for obtaining official grade reports from the individual the principal designates as the keeper of official grades before the student represents the school. This provision applies to all grading periods. It also applies to all three school-week evaluation periods for ineligible students.
Hitchcock Independent School District
Spectator’s Code of Conduct
The Hitchcock Independent School District believes parents and community play a vital role in the development of student-athletes. The essential elements of character building and ethics in sports are embodied in the concept of sportsmanship and six core principles: trustworthiness, respect, responsibility, fairness, caring, and good citizenship. The highest potential of sports is achieved when competition reflects these “six pillars of character.”
